The opening of the actual film is a picture of wired fence and the title name fades in of ‘The exorcism Of Emily Rose’ in blood red with a few dashes in it. The music is very eerie and orchestral. The title then fades out followed with the still picture of the fence wire into blackness while the music is still playing.
It then goes onto a medium close up of grass or something like that blowing vigorously in the wind, we can hear the wind clearly, like a big gust of wind.
The picture then moves to what looks like apples lying on the ground obviously fallen off. These are the shots to establish the surroundings show the audience the eeriness of it all.
The shot changes rapidly to like a barn house, looks very old and scary, and battered by weather. The camera slowly zooms in from a long high shot. At the bottom you see a man walking towards this barn house. The shot immediately changes to his feet from where he takes a step and walks into a puddle. The ground looks very uncared for, no green grass no flowers. Sets the scene for a horror film. It then goes to a long shot of the house where the man is walking up the stairs and knocks three times. All this time the music is very eerie and pianos are playing, to build up suspense and tension. Close up of a man where we almost see his face, he is in black, shows the grimness of the film. He is looking away from the house and blows into his hands, showing he is cold, he is holding himself shivering and knocks 3 more times again. He looks into the glass and we are shown long shot of the house. The man is slowly walking away from the house, the camera does a medium long shot of the man, and he is dressed in a black coat with a black hat and scarf he facing away from the house. We are shown a long shot picture of a shed with a tractor, it looks very dirty and disused. The shot then goes onto man and does a very slow zoom in on him to the side. The camera then switches to a North and south spinner with a horse and it is swinging towards north. The camera then switches back to the man who then looks down to the floor and a quick switch over happens where we see two cats one ginger and the other black. The man then faces towards the house as the audience presumes and starts pacing towards it. Where we are shown a close-up of a beehive with the sound of the bees buzzing this is diagetic sound as it is part of the scene. He then looks up towards the white window, the paint is all cracked and it looks dirty, we see a small face peering through black curtains, this all adds to mise-en-scene as the black curtains make the house look scary and the cracked dirty paint all makes it look uncared and eerie. The camera angle then goes to a long shot and we see a woman opening the door the camera angle is a long medium shot. We are shown the man’s facial expression with a close-up. The woman then asks “Are you the medical examiner?” he nods and then walks towards her, the music is still quite suspense and is starting to get louder as the woman opens the door. We are then shown a family, a close up zoom of a youngish boy who is holding a mug, we can hear the man walking in with the diagetic sounds of his footsteps on the wooden flooring. In the room there is a young boy and 3 females sitting around a table, the girl in the middle is crying while the woman to the right is comforting her. They use a lot of diagetic sound in the beginning as we hear footsteps and crying and the door shutting and etc.
That is the end of the 2 minutes deconstruction of The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Hope you enjoy it J
